The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) Yojana is a central government new initiative, under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, aimed at providing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections to women from families living below the poverty line.
The program was launched on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.
Initially, it was planned to provide 80 million LPG connections to low-income families. The federal budget for fiscal year 2021/22 allocated funds for an additional 10 million connections under the PMUY program. During this phase, targeted assistance was provided to migrant families.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) program has been expanded to provide an additional 10 million LPG connections over three years, from fiscal year 2023/24 to 2025/26.

Eligibility Criteria Details
Under this scheme, initially, the benefit of the scheme will be given to those adult women who fulfill the following eligibility-
- The applicant must be at least 18 years old.
- She must not have a gas connection at her residence.
- She must belong to one of the following categories: women (SC, ST, OBC) and BPAL families.
PM Ujjwala Yojana Benefits
The Indian government offers a subsidy of 1600 rupees for gas connections under the PMUY program (for a 14.2 kg cylinder or 1150 rupees for a 5 kg cylinder). This subsidy covers:
- Gas cylinder deposit: 1250 rupees for a 14.2 kg cylinder or 800 rupees for a 5 kg cylinder
- Regulator: 150 rupees
- LPG hose: 100 rupees
- Gas customer card: 25 rupees
- Inspection, installation, and demonstration fee: 75 rupees.
In addition, all PMUY beneficiaries receive their first LPG refill and a free cooktop from the oil company (OMC) when connecting without a deposit.
